Van Vleck House & Gardens is kicking off a community photo contest on April 9th! Photos must be taken at Van Vleck House & Gardens, open to the public daily from dawn to dusk. The hope is that the natural beauty found within the gates can inspire amateur photographers young and old to visit and take part in the contest. There are four categories of amateur competition:

  • Youth (age 17 and younger) division: black and white and color photo categories. Entry to the Youth category is free!
  • Amateur (age 18 and older) division: black and white and color photo categories. Contest entry details and entry links are on our website. Photos must be taken at Van Vleck House & Gardens between April 9th and May 13th and must not include any people.
  • Professional photography materials from leading suppliers will be awarded as prizes in each category.
Dr. Barry DiBernardo is a Montclair resident and brought the idea of an amateur photography contest at Van Vleck House & Gardens to our organization. Dr DiBernardo is not only a successful plastic surgeon, he is an accomplished photographer and has traveled the world in pursuit of expanding his artistic skills and catalog. Using a unique lens to take breathtaking outdoor digital images, his work (used above and below) is likened to Ansel Adams. Barry has extended his expertise in imaging and lenses for better detection of skin cancers in his practice and work with other leaders in his field. Barry's photos will be on display in Van Vleck House on select weekend afternoons during the contest and admission is free.

Barry enlisted the help of two other very talented photographers to serve as contest judges with him, Jay Dickman and Nick Palmieri. On May 22nd at 2pm, there will be an awards ceremony for the contest winners. Jay Dickman, National Geographic and Pulitzer prize-winning photographer, will also give a photo presentation and lecture at the conclusion of the awards.

You can reserve a ticket to the ceremony and lecture here.
